Sudan’s national robotics team has won the gold medal for the Rajaa Cherkaoui El Moursli Award for Courageous Achievement at the 2026 FIRST Global Challenge in Incheon, South Korea, supported by telecommunications company Sudani.
The international competition, held from 7 to 10 October, brought together more than 185 national teams to tackle engineering challenges focused on wildfire-related technology. Sudan’s recognition highlighted the team’s determination to develop robotics capabilities despite significant logistical and technical obstacles.

Building a Robot Across Borders
One of the most distinctive aspects of the Sudanese team’s participation was its approach to robot development. With students working remotely from several countries, the team relied on digital collaboration and engineering software to prepare for the competition.
According to the team’s own account, its members used SolidWorks, a computer-aided design platform, to develop a virtual model of their robot before gaining access to physical equipment. The approach allowed students to work on mechanical design and engineering concepts despite being geographically separated.

The competition required participants to combine robotics engineering, programming and teamwork to complete technology-based challenges. For the Sudanese students, the project provided practical experience in applying technical knowledge to a demanding international competition.
Sudani Sponsors Sudan’s Young Innovators
Sudani, one of Sudan’s telecommunications companies, announced its sponsorship of the national team ahead of the competition, reinforcing its involvement in youth development and technological innovation.

The company publicly highlighted its support for Sudanese students participating in international robotics competitions, positioning the sponsorship as part of its broader commitment to encouraging technical skills and innovation among young people.
The partnership also illustrates the potential role of private-sector companies in helping emerging Sudanese talent access international science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) opportunities.
International Recognition for Sudanese Talent
The Rajaa Cherkaoui El Moursli Award for Courageous Achievement recognises teams that demonstrate determination and a constructive approach when facing difficult circumstances during the FIRST Global Challenge.

For Sudan’s robotics team, the gold medal represents recognition of its perseverance, collaboration and commitment to engineering education.
The achievement also draws attention to the growing potential of Sudanese students in robotics, digital engineering and technological innovation, highlighting opportunities for businesses and educational institutions to invest in the country’s next generation of technical professionals.
